At Braunstone Frith Primary School we are passionate about the teaching and learning of English, and believe that it is a fundamental life skill. Literacy develops children’s ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes. We believe that the teaching of literacy is crucial to the overall development of the child and their access to the curriculum in all its aspects. Reading, writing and oracy are fundamental skills within the curriculum, which enable pupils to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate effectively and confidently with others.

In Key Stage 2:

In literacy this year, children will be taught grammar skills and to write in a range of fiction and non-fiction styles for example; stories, poetry, instructions, reports and discussions. Specific information for each year group has been sent out in the curriculum leaflet.

The teachers will be teaching the punctuation and grammar that the children will need to use, the types of words they should use and how they should set out their work.

We are also beginning a new scheme of teaching for spelling whereby the children will have discreet spelling lessons 3 times per week.
