Western Park Group - Yr 1 & 2

western park

Hi we are Western Park Group and we are a mixture of Year 1 and Year 2 children.

In Western Group, we are learning the 42 Phonics sounds (phonemes) through fun and practical activities.  We learn the sounds through the letters and sounds scheme.  We practise forming our letters with ‘froggy fingers’ when using a pencil and writing in the air! When we know our sounds we can blend the sounds together to read simple words and captions. We segment the words by saying the word robotting the words and writing the word.

In guided reading we use and apply our phonic knowledge through a range of fun activities. We read books together and talk about what is happening in the story and what might happen next. We read big books together and can talk about the front cover, back cover, author, main characters and answer questions about the book.

We have fun learning how to write independently using mark making, recognisable letters and sounds.  Our teacher likes us to read our work back so that she knows what we are trying to write.  Sometimes our teacher can read our writing which means we are trying hard to use our sounds, leave finger spaces and write words we know.

We love learning about and investigating numbers.  We can count by rote and learn to count objects accurately. We can write and recognise numbers up to 20.  We learn about more and less using lots of practical resources.  We find about different 2D shapes and can name and talk about the properties of circles, squares, rectangles and triangles.

Visit our web page "How to help your child at home" for more information on how to support your child's learning.

Parents: If you want to help us learn and be a star parent, please help us to complete our homework and sign our reading race track! If you have any questions you can always make an appointment to see your child's teacher at any time.
