Key skill: Working creatively

Visual support: Sketchbooks, Sketching pencils, Artist prompt cards.

Our aim is that children who leave our school in Year 6 will be able to:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Grow in confidence in their ability to imagine and produce creative work.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works, using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
  • Feel inspired and enthused to visit galleries or places to celebrate the Arts.

How our children learn to be an Artist

Children are encouraged to produce beautiful work drawing on their observational skills and their own creativity.

Within Art, our children learn a variety of skills and techniques, focusing in on line, tone and colour. Children are given the opportunity to experiment using a range of mediums and build on their ideas in their own sketchbooks.

Children are taught about what it means to be an Artist and how Art movements have evolved throughout History. Each year, children study particular Artists and produce work in the style of their particular movement.

Foundation Stage - Pointillism

Year 1 - Impressionism

Year 2 - Fauvism

Year 3 - Expressionism

Year 4 - Cubism

Year 5 - Surrealism

Year 6 - Pop Art

All children are taught about the grading of pencil and how they can be used to create line, tone, depth and shade.

In painting, children are taught about primary and secondary colours and the benefits of mixing colour.

Printing and collage is taught to enable the children to experiment with various media to create different new and different effects and textures.

Once our children have a sense of ‘Working Creatively’ they can apply these skills throughout the year in a range of other subjects with confidence.
