The Role of a Governor
Different Governing Bodies operate in different ways, but governors will be expected to do far more than merely attend meetings. Effective governors will visit the school regularly to see and understand how the school operates. They will visit the school for a particular purpose and produce reports for their fellow Governors. Governors will also be expected to receive and understand reports from the headteacher and senior leaders so they can question, challenge and support, thereby improving the quality of the education provided at the School.
The governing body operates a code of conduct which sets an ethos of professionalism and high expectations of governors. Governors are provided with this part of their induction into the school and will be expected to work within it, since a governing body operates as a corporate entity with corporate responsibility.
As well as the six meetings per year of the full governing body (FGB), smaller committees meet to look at different areas of school life.
These are:
The School Improvement Committee
The SIC checks on how well the children are taught & how well they learn.
Behaviour and Safety, including Premises Committee
The main purpose of this committee is to ensure that the school and grounds provide a safe, secure environment for all and to report back to the full governing body any issues related to this. The BSPC also checks that the staff and children are safe and they look at children's behaviour in school.
Finance and Personnel Committee
The FPC checks that the schools money is spent in the best way to meet the children’s needs and ensures that people who work in school are treated fairly.
The constitution of the Governing Body and its committees are outlined below.
All governors are elected to a term of four years apart from Mrs Amelia Smith, the Headteacher, whose term is open.
